WHAT TO EXPECT

Whether you are a seasoned fisherman looking for new water or new techniques to improve your game, or if you are needing a fishing buddy, or if you have never held a fly rod, we have you covered. We offer both full and half day trips throughout the area. Our local waters vary from high alpine, hike access cutthroat lakes, to road accessed wade rivers – and everything in between! We customize each trip based on the experience you desire, current area fishing conditions, size of group and experience level. A few of our favorites are the Conejos River and the Rio Costilla.

The Conejos is the largest tributary to the Rio Grande. It runs from the southern aspect of the San Juan mountains and flows eastward toward the small Colorado town of Antonito. This river is well known for its fickle personality. To the newcomer, the Conejos can be difficult to find success in catching fish. The guides at Zia Fly have put a lot of time and effort into figuring out the puzzle that the Conejos presents. The Conejos fishes reasonably well in April, until the spring runoff begins. Then in early to mid-June, the river can be good to excellent fishing as the stream flows subside.

The Rio Costilla, located in the Valle Vidal unit of the Carson National Forest, is a beautiful meandering meadow stream great for beginners and experienced alike. The Costilla features a healthy population of native Rio Grande Cutthroat trout and has been the focus of many conservation and habitat projects. The Valle Vidal is home to thousands of elk, bear, Bighorn sheep and many other creatures. Those interested in fishing, wildlife spotting and photography cannot miss this one of a kind place. Access is restricted, with part of the public stretch open July 1st – December 31st.

The friendly guides from Zia Fly and Sport are CPR and First Aid certified and will make every effort to accommodate any disabilities or concerns to the best of our ability. We are licensed and insured to guide on New Mexico’s greatest waters.  Call our partners at Zia Fly directly at 575-779-3000 for more information and to reserve your trip.
